  1. Transitions aren't always so bad

by , 31-01-12 at 07:04 PM (The tortoise and the unicorn)
I really didn't expect to feel the way I'm feeling about being an intern. With the first week over and the realisation that it's actually going to be a very manageable job for the time being, I've started to let go of many of my insecurities and simply enjoy the realities of my job.

Today I gave my first lecture as a doctor to a good turn out of Griffith and Bond medical students and I thought it went really well. I had a terrific case study to use and even got a call from pathology ...

  2. Duty of Care

    by , 31-01-12 at 12:05 AM
It's funny that when you're not a med student, you have never had a duty of care to help someone in distress but when you're a med student it starts to happen to you. Maybe not for everyone but it's happened twice to me in the space of two months.

The first time was at a cultural dance party. Someone had been feeling a bit queasy and then went pale. My dad straight away went on stage and called out for a doctor amongst everyone. I set back a bit waiting, but more so hoping for someone ...

Plus I was having loads of fun throughout the year and I may have forgotten about you for just a little while.

At the end of last year I had to sit supplementary exams, which were not fun I guarantee you, but I passed in the end (yay!) so I have plenty ...
  4. Diagnosis: Unknown

    by , 29-01-12 at 06:06 AM
I always used to wonder why it is so hard for some patients to get a proper diagnosis. I reasoned that when a patient is seriously ill, doctors will continue to look for an answer until they find the cause. Someone must know the disease, which means it is just a matter of referring to the right person, right? Gradually, I came to find out that medicine does not work this way. This is unfortunate because a lot of rare diseases are only diagnosed after many years, if they are ever diagnosed. So why ...

  5. Rainy days

by , 28-01-12 at 02:33 PM (Stereoscopic vision and polymorphic beats...)
The rain is beating rhythmically against the blackened streets of Sydney suburbia as I write this first entry to a blog that was perhaps many years in the making (at least conceptually...and on paper). This first entry should perhaps outline what I hope to achieve here, but the truth is my only real objective is to put into the blogosphere my experiences and hope that someone, somewhere out there is better off for the reading of it (as I have benefited from my fellow bloggers). I say path to medicine ...
