Academic Requirements
Pre-requisites – One of either Chemistry, Mathematical Studies, Physics or Specialist Mathematics AND one of either Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics.

Assumed Knowledge
Stage 2 Chemistry and Physics

Intake per year
84 places (~54 CSP + 30 International students)

How to apply:

Register to sit for the UMAT exam by 3^rd June 2011 and sit the exam on the 27^th June 2011.
Register for B. Dental Surgery on SATAC by 30 September 2011.
Sit year 12 (SACE, HSC etc.) and acquire an ATAR.
Receive interview offer via the tracking website.
Attend the interviews if you are offered.
Offers are released on the ~14th January 2012 via SATAC and the tracking website.
Second round offers are released on the ~3 February via SATAC.

Interview offers

Are released in late October (Released on the 28^th of October in 2011)
Are determined by your UMAT score alone
UMAT cut off was ~83%tile (overall 58) in 2011
No UMAT section weighting is used to determine interview offers
Applicants are notified via the tracking website (see appendix B)
There are no second round interview offers for BDS
330 or so applicants were given an interview in 2011 (competing for 54 spots)

Interviews

Are held in early December
You are able to pick a time slot from the tracking website if you are successful in obtaining an interview offer
Time slots/ interviews are 20 minutes long
~2 interviewers will assess you
You will be asked to remain within an area after an interview and wait until the interviews agree on a score for you
If no problems, you will be allowed to leave to interviews
You may be asked to re-take the interview if interviewers cannot agree
You will NEVER find out your interview score

Offers

Will be released in Janurary
Will be released in mail, via the SATAC releases and on the tracking website
If you have not received an offer, you will see your position on the merit-ranking list

Merit Ranking List

Is a list of the candidates that shows their ranking against each other, and their probability of receiving an offer
Is created in a complex system [to see how it works see appendix C]
Uses your interview score, as well as your UMAT and ATAR
If the ATAR requirement (cut-off 90) is not met, you will be removed from the merit list (and will no longer be considered for BDS this year)
If you do not receive a first round offer, you will see your position on the ranking list
If 54 places are offered on the list, person at position 55 will see their position (55) on the list
Offers will be made down the ranking list until all the spots are filled and confirmed
In 2010, offers were made up to rank 110

Non-standard entry
By non-standard, it means people who are currently studying a course at a university. The process is no different for non-standard students, it is exactly the same expect they will use your GPA as well as your ATAR for the academic component of entry. They will consider both to determine your ranking on the merit list. The GPA cut-off is a 5.0 (credit) average. That means if you don’t get that 5.0, you will be removed from the merit-list (the same as not getting the 90 ATAR). And also, it doesn’t matter where you are currently studying, anyone can apply for BDS.

International Applicants

Must complete the PQA (organised through the university)
Based on PQA score, are invited the attend an interview
Offers for interviews are released ~13th September
Interviews are held late September/ beginning of October
Offers are released ~20th October

Merit-ranking list
What do you mean by merit-ranking list?
It’s just the way to organise the candidates to make offers. Please see appendix C for more information.

Where does my ATAR come into it?
That’s all to do with the merit-list. Simply, if you do not make the cut-off (of 90), you will be taken off the merit list and not be considered. The ATAR only has a small role to play other than that.

What do you mean small role?
When determining the merit-list, it can help differentiate two candidates withthe same UMAT score. If one person had a higher ATAR, that person will be above the other candidate on the merit list. See appendix C.

Other
It’s an undergraduate degree, but can I still apply if I have completed a degree?
Of course! The process is no different and you will be included with all the school leavers. The only difference is that your GPA from your degree (combined for all years) or the STAT test will be used rather than your ATAR.

That's cool. Relieved it wasn't 400 or something haha, that would make things harder eh.

I think I got lowest UMAT score in 2010 for an interview. And I *just* managed to get into the course. Although the odds of someone like me getting in are pretty low, you never know.
