    • UWS MBBS Other Entry Routes

Deadlines and dates provided for 2012 entry are current as of the 30/11/2011. Statistics likewise should be taken only as a guide. This guide is intended only as a guide and NOT as an exhaustive resource on admission into the UWS MBBS program. Please check the below dates (links are mostly provided) for your own reference.

      MBBS Categories

      Local Applicants
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens.

      International Applicants
All applicants other than Australian citizens, Australian Permanent Residents or New Zealand citizens - either onshore or offshore.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Applicants
Eligible applicants may apply under this scheme - please visit the ATSI site for further information.

      Advanced Science Pathway
Applicants who complete Year 1 (full time) of any of the three Advanced Science courses (Science, Medical Science or Natural Sciences) will be considered for an interview if they achieve a GPA of 5.5 or more, achieve 50 percentile or more in UMAT and have met all mandatory requirements of the Advanced Science course as advised by the Head of Program. There are a total of six spaces available for interview in this category (six in total, not six per course). If there are more eligible applicants than there are interview places, applicants will be ranked using their UMAT total percentile.

      Transfer Requests
Applicants who are currently (or have previously been) enrolled in a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at another university (onshore or overseas) can apply using the Transfer Request form. This category of applicant may apply via UAC to compete for a Year 1 position.

      Alternative entry Schemes

Applicants who complete Year 1 (full time) of any of the three Advanced Science courses (Science, Medical Science or Natural Sciences) will be considered for an interview if they achieve a GPA of 5.5 or more, achieve 50 percentile or more in UMAT and have met all mandatory requirements of the Advanced Science course as advised by the Head of Program. There are a total of six spaces available for interview in this category (six in total, not six per course). If there are more eligible applicants than there are interview places, applicants will be ranked using their UMAT total percentile.

      Transfers

UWS will consider applications from students who have partially completed a medical degree program at another university. Such applications will be considered only where applicants have compelling reasons for wishing to transfer and are in good academic standing. Students who resided in New South Wales but subsequently accepted a medical school placement outside of New South Wales are unlikely to be successful in transferring to the UWS MBBS.

Currently enrolled MBBS students may also apply via the standard application process (UAC, UMAT and online registration), on the understanding that if they gain a place in the UWS MBBS program, they must commence in Year 1 of the program.
Overseas-qualified medical practitioners are not eligible to apply via this method. They are advised to contact the Australian Medical Council.

International applicants should apply via the International Admissions Office.
Transfer requests must be submitted as follows:
      1. Complete all sections of the Transfer Application Form (available online in August 2012 via the School website) by 30 September, 2012.
      2. Submit certified copies of transcripts for current medical degree progression.
Incomplete or late requests cannot be considered.

      Indigenous Entry

The School recognises the large Indigenous population in Greater Western Sydney and the need for more Indigenous doctors across Australia. The School's staff includes an Indigenous Program Officer to work with these students and Indigenous communities in Greater Western Sydney. It will endeavour to meet a target of eight Indigenous students each year.

In addition to its role in producing more Indigenous Doctors, UWS School of Medicine aims to develop the skills and cultural awareness and sensitivity of its non-Indigenous students. All UWS MBBS students undertake an Indigenous attachment in Year Five of their course.

Indigenous applicants for Medicine at UWS should apply directly to the school using the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Registration form, available from Applying for Medicine.

Indigenous applicants should have successfully completed at least the equivalent of the NSW HSC. It is desirable but not essential that they sit the UMAT. The UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) is administered by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER).

The most important criteria for admission will be assessment of the applicant’s desire to study medicine and their likelihood of succeeding in the course, which will be determined by the School on a case by case basis.

You will receive an auto receipt on lodgement of the MBBS Registration form (please retain this for your records).
You will be contacted in early October if any data is missing from your record. If you have not received an email from the School of Medicine by the end of the first week of October, 2012, please email medstudent@uws.edu.au to advise. Ensure you have checked your "junk" email folder first.

      Interview Information

MMIs will be held at the University of Western Sydney’s Campbelltown Campus from (TBA). Candidates will book their own interview time and date via the Automated Interview Booking System or AIBS.
A supplementary round of interviews will be held on (TBA) January 2013 and will be strictly limited to:
      · Interstate applicants
      · Applicants with a predicted ATAR that does not meet the criteria, who on release of results, become eligible.

Whilst it may be possible to accommodate an Interstate applicant request to attend the December interviews, NSW & ACT applicants are not permitted to attend the supplementary round of interviews.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are available for interview. No alternative arrangements will be made for applicants who are unable to attend during the scheduled time.

Applicants who are invited to attend an interview and fail to attend on the specified date, time and location will be regarded as having withdrawn their application. Only those candidates who attend an interview will be considered for final selection.

Full instructions will be included with your invitation to interview.

      Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites required for study, however, HSC level Chemistry is assumed knowledge.

      Offer Categories

The School of Medicine will have approximately 120 places within the four different categories of Commonwealth Supported, Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme (MRBS), Bonded Medical Places (BMP) and International.

      Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)
A Commonwealth Supported Place is a higher education place for which the Commonwealth Government makes a contribution towards the cost of the student’s education. Students placed into this category have no bonding or government funded scholarship attached to their enrolment. For more information, please seehttp://www.goingtouni.gov.au. The School offers approximately 75 unfettered CSPs each year.

Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme (MRBS)
The MRBS is a Commonwealth Government initiative to deliver more doctors and improved services to rural communities. Upon completion of the MBBS, students who have entered into a contract with the Commonwealth Government for the scholarship, agree to practice for six years in rural areas of Australia. The School offers approximately four MRBS places each year. The MRBS places are offered after students have commenced the course. For further information regarding the conditions and monetary value of the Scholarship please contact the Department of Health and Ageing on:

      Bonded Medical Places (BMP) Scheme
This scheme was devised by the Commonwealth Government to provide bonded medical places across all existing medical schools, creating additional CSP places that would not otherwise be available. The School offers approximately 26 BMPs each year.

Students who accept a BMP in the medical course agree to work in a district of workforce shortage for a period of five years upon completion of their subsequent vocational training. To obtain further information on the BMP, please contact the Department of Health and Aging on:
