No... Just No.

I saw a couple of memes of this circulating the net a few days ago and honestly thought it was one of those 'first world problems' jokes. Seriously, for someone who wants to enter Law, she's got a pretty poor understanding of what can warrant a law-suit. I loved the school representative's point that she could have done law at another university.

'But Mummm! But Mummm!! I want 2 dO law at siidneyy *stamps foot*'

Okay, I understand if she feels the school didn't allow her to 'reach her potential' but the fact that she was internally suspended on a few occasions hints at some other underlying problems- I don't think I'm in the position to judge the nature of this. For all I know, she could have been suspended for failing to complete tasks as a result of anxiety/ family problems/ depression and the school refused to empathise.

The point about using words that were 'too long' is ridiculous. If you're focusing too much on making yourself sound super intelligent in essays and this gets in the way of what you're actually writing, your teacher has every right to tell you that it's not a good essay (as long as they're not patronising or disparaging about it). I had the same problem, I took the teacher's advice and VOILA, improvement.

Oh well, at least she has a funny story to tell her grandchildren.

hi guys just starting out here,
got a pretty specific question. im doing an irrelevant course to science (commerce) at deakin university and i graduated last year with an atar of 88.65. i realise thats low. yes.
im trying to get into a science degree to start my long ass journey to medicine. but which science degree?
my options are

Monash: Bachelor of Science (easy to get in to, not sure if its appropriate though), Bachelor of Biomedicine (abov my atar and i am missing a prereq of chemistry 3/4)

Melbourne Uni: Bachelor of Science (a little above my atar but i might get in, this is what im hoping for)

Deakin: Bachelor of Biomedical science (below my atar, should get in but again not entirely sure its appropriate for med studies down the track)

so my real question is what would be my best best? i like the idea of the biomed at monash but i am currently studying the shit out of chemistry to make up for the lack in prereq (i realise that makes no difference but possibly a transfer through monash science?

i am defering my commerce course to start studying biology and chemistry again because i havent done chem since year 11.
i have the motivation its just a question of scores now. i can work hard (despite my atar, i got sick during exams)

i plan to go through vtac again like the upcoming year 12's.
if i get into any of those with some HARD F***ING work could i be a doctor? which is the most limited?

Hey Everyone!

Thought I might introduce myself, I am currently half way through my B. of Nursing degree which I am doing as a precursor to graduate entry into Medicine. I have wanted to be a doctor since I was 6 years old, didn't put enough work in during year 11 and 12 at school so sort of forgot about it for a while, decided to do nursing, did some of my degree, went off and traveled/worked/procrastinated for a few more years, went back, did some more of my degree, took some more time off due to family stuff, now I'm back and ready to take the step to actually living the life I've always wanted (better late than never right!).

Plan on sitting the GAMSAT in 2013 for 2014 entry :) Super pumped and motivate at the moment, the future has never looked so good (though far away past years of study/exams/stress).

Hi All,

New to MSO.

I'm after some advice and information on the liklihood of getting into dent, well anywhere....

Thinking Charles Sturt and La Torbe are my best chances, hopefully La Trobe as I'm from Bendigo.

I graduated from Oral Health Science last year at La Trobe with a WAM of 75ish (does any know how to convert to GPA?)

I also have dental nursing experience (4-5 years), completed first 2 years of a Dental Tech app and the 1st year of Batchlor of Nursing (WAM 76ish?)

My father is a dentist in Bendigo for 25+ years and want to eventually take the practice over.

Sitting the UMAT this year for hte first time hoping for a great percentile 96+ would get me into La Tobe Bendigo but unlikely I think!

Any advised woud be greatly appreciated.

with all this foreboding discussion regarding the lack of post grad placements and internships in the next 5-6 years due to escalating numbers of medical graduates, what's really going to happen?

Are medical school graduates going to find themselves years without finding internships and post grad education? They'll just be sitting on a degree they can't use (like in some other countries already).

If they're lucky enough to be selected, are they going to have a very limited choice of what to specialty/direction to go?

Will the future injection of doctors into Australian society result in unemployment (like in Malaysia)? Will salaries be heavily affected?
It just seems so short sighted for anyone to enter this profession with such a fog blinding the near future. (well for me anyway, since i can't answer these questions)

I'm sure a typical response would be, "i'm studying medicine b/c ideal x, ideal y; and though these future uncertainties bother me, they're aren't enough to stop me from studying what i love"

for me, a reality without internship+post grad placement, unemployment and low salary, is really quite ominous.
Currently, from what I hear, there is an oversupply of doctors in UK, Canada, Poland, some parts of usa and maybe? australia. At first a reasonable back plan for practicing medicine overseas would be Commenwealth countries plus the states. But the more i read on the net, the more i see Australia is their back up plan.

what are we going to do?

As irrelevant and contradictory as this may sound in regards to my last thread, should I decide to go on and study till my last breath in a final...

As irrelevant and contradictory as this may sound in regards to my last thread, should I decide to go on and study till my last breath in a final attempt this year to gain acceptance into ANY of the medicine courses across the country and anywhere I can go? Guess I've been pondering on whether or not it'd be even worth or if I even should sit that dreaded and costly UMAT exam which is coming up very soon, despite knowing my OP score will not be very high at all...

To further expand upon this contradictory jibber-jabber, When I said I'd be willing to gain acceptance anywhere; I really did mean I'd be willing to gain acceptance and go anywhere! Heck, at one stage I was looking at that oceania med school. So my first question for today is: are there any less known or popular undergraduate medical programs in Australia or even accredited in Australia (by that I mean international schools) that would accept someone with a slightly lower OP/ATAR/rank?

Second question is: Is it too late to try and significantly improve the predicted OP/rank for one at this stage in the year? Any programs one could do to try boost it?

Just to give you an idea of my standing, I'll give you one of my current marks for term one this year:
English: VHA7
Math B: HA5
Physics: HA8
Chemistry: SA6
Biology: HA8

(not necessarily straight A's so far! Although, if it makes any difference, I go to BSHS, which apparently does pretty reasonably in QCS)

So, I guess you sort of get the general gist of this thread... Should I fight on and try tackle this UMAT or should I save myself some cash and try other ways? Any options or feedback would be much appreciated!

EDIT: giving up all hope this year... Not next year and so on, I'll still be studying and shuffling for Graduate and non standard!

Hey everyone, I just missed out on getting an offer to study Medicine at Adelaide last year, and so now I am studying a double degree of Law and Health Sciences. However, I still really want to transfer to Med at the end of the year.
The thing is, now I feel like a real idiot for doing Law as well as Health Sciences as it is much more difficult to get high marks in Law than it is to get high in Health Sciences (so far I have got all HDs and one D for Health Sciences and I have got mainly Cs for Law.). Is that going to be a big issue for me to transfer, as I know you need high grades? Would you advise me to defer/drop Law next semester, or will doing a harder subject actually give me more points in the transfer process?
I would really appreciate it if someone who has transferred to Med (preferably from Health Sciences in Adelaide) could give me some information about the transfer procedure. I have tried emailing Beverly Karaffa, who is in charge of transfer, but has just got back from leave and is difficult to get in contact with.
Thanks in advance!

Greetings ! I absolutely love this site and how everyone is so friendly ! I'm glad i found this site :-)
Haha just to briefly introduce myself..
I am in year 10, living in wa, and an asian/aussie. I wish to study dentistry or medicine, but i have so many questions !
Overall i'm at the top of my year group at school, and my back up plan - if i dont get in would be to do language.
Now, i'm stuck with subject selection, and i can't decide between chem with physics and chem with human bio. I am trying to head for uwa, and when i asked - they just told me to choose something that will get me the highest atar. I understand that, but i really dont know what to choose. I don't struggle immensely on physics, however it's not my favourite nor best subject. But on the other hand - human bio, i heard it gets scaled down a lot !? :(
What would you really recommend? Should i still choose physics - even though it isn't a strong subject for me?

Also, i know i'm still quite young etc, but i keep getting this feeling that i will no way get into dentistry or medicine T.T
i really want to get into dentistry, however i always think to myself "It's too hard... Being realistic, i wont get in..." Everyone tells me its hard work and i know, but i want to know actually how hard it is to get an atar of 96. (since i'm rural and all) what grades should you be getting etc? How much did you all study ?

And last question... Is getting into dentistry for rural - more competitive or less competitive? What atar should i be actually getting to feel safe? Or to secure my spot? I'm feeling very doubtful :(

I'm sorry if there were too many questions or if they were unclear, but it is because my mind has not been cleared =.=
School is very painful, haha but i'm still not giving up !

Please give me lots of advice and encouragements. Thank you !

Currently studying in year 13 (british system so we have 13 years in school, YAY =.=) doing Bio, Chem, Physics and Math. I should have discovered this web page earlier. Had I done so, I may have learned a lot of important details.

I plan on studying Medicine and Monash, UNSW or going for the longer option of studying and under grad then onto graduate entry at Uni of Melbourne or Sydney.

Currently also questioning the reason as to why I want to do medicine. I've wanted to do it for years and years but now I'm at the final step and the self-doubt hits hard....not to mention the disastrous ISAT score.

Any words of wisdom from anyone will be HIGHLY appreciated.
