Hint: Read miss_universe's UMAT guide :3

Also, I personally found section 3 the most easiest to study for (and hence I have an abnormally high mark for section 3 compared to my horridly low marks for my other sections lol), I wrote down all the different types of patterns possible, and wrote down examples and just memorised them basically.. not the best method for studying I assure you :P

i did exactly what dlehddud did for section 3, made a list/took notes of all the possible patterns that i ever encountered and copied out/drew tons of examples, in a time period from march to early july and pretty much just just went through them often. Essentially i studied for it like any other subject. End result was also an abnormally high mark for section 3, and in similar fashion flunked out on the other 2 sections

I wouldn't say there's any harm in doing umat prep, it's not like the interview where you might over rehearse, so treat umat like an extra subject and go for it, July is quite a while away. Consistency is the key I think, no good using up all your prep material 3 months before the exam, you should pace yourself

There's not going to be any harm in preparing for UMAT early if you want to. I personally didn't find out about UMAT prep until 2-3 months before the exam, and spent the 2 weeks before the exams putting in daily study, and still turned out with relatively good marks.

From personal experience, Section 3 was extremely easy to improve on.

Up to a week before the UMAT, I literally had 0-40 percentile scores for my S3. Like the terrible student I am, I spent the day before UMAT only doing S3 excercises from a prep course, and I guess something clicked for me and once you get the hang of the questions I was much more confident in my S3. I ended up getting about 99 percentile in my section 3

5-6 months is more than enough time to improve! I only really started studying 3-4 months before the UMAT and I must say that this time was absolutely crucial in me getting the marks I got in order to get into Med. I feel that I would've done better if I had done more preparation, and started earlier, but I agree with what some have said - preparing will only help you so much, until your skill just plateaus.

I haven't seen any evidence that practising will worsen your score, which is the main thing, and so any prep that you do can only improve your score. However, on the last week or so, probably wind it down a little to calm your nerves etc. My advice would be, treat the UMAT as another subject at school (but don't overwhelm yourself with too much work, or you may burn out). Given that the UMAT counts as much as your ATAR in many uni admissions, you should not undermine its importance. Further, once you sit it, the weight is lifted and you have that extra time to focus on school.

Also, prior to practising I was absolutely hopeless at Section 3. After some practising, it turned out to be my highest scoring section - it seems to be the one people can improve the most. Once you figure out the patterns that they test, there are only so many combinations that they can ask from you...

But section 1 and 2 (section 2 harder to improve than section 1) seem to be harder to improve - you do improve from practising, but not quite as much...it nonetheless helps to know the nature and style of the questions though!

From experience the UMAT is definitely something you can study for (which is ironic since the whole purpose of it was to be something you couldn't study for) and 5/6 months should be fine.

If you start work on learning patterns and getting familar with visual puzzles for section 3 now you can really boost your UMAT marks by exam time, particularly if you struggle at it initially learning a few easy tricks helps heaps. Section 1 you can probably improve quite a bit by simply completing several practice papers over time mostly to improve your speed. Section 2 is the hardest to study for (consequently you have a lot of people who get very high scores in sections 1 and 3 getting relatively low scores in section 2), the only thing you can do is learn new vocab and how to characterize different emotions experience by people in the scenarios.
