I think UMAT is an excellent way of getting bossy "my child must be a doctor" parents to shut up. They can argue over UAIs. They can't argue over a test nobody really understands (well, at least, not the scoring anyway).

And like LG said, careers counsellors don't know jack. Unless you study at james ruse or the like.

Posted 04-07-07 12:50 PM I asked my counsellor about UTas med, and how to apply:
"The University of Tasmania?" *quizzical look*

Posted 04-07-07 01:22 PM this is going to make veon pissed but.... we had melb high's career councilor for a while and he was amazing. He had a whole powerpoint of how the UMAT was ranked, different undergrad/postgrad options and how long each of them take, including NZ, we also got a good explanation of the UMAT, and a list of application dates for each university and what was required. It was a bit scary really :P

would it matter if u did have a career counsellor who is in the know? if one is passionate about getting into a field he/she would be quite capable of finding out for themselves the entry requirements etc. having a good careers advisor isn't going to guarantee u anything... not everyone from ruse makes it into med thus why many disenchanted 99ers make a kneejerk decision to go into law so as not to "waste" their uai

I personally know a friend who got 105 in section 1 -.- (100, 99, 98 for percentiles) and something silly like 250ish raw score ~_~;
For sakes of comparison, I also got 271 percentile last year like kevin) but my raw score was 216

Posted 04-07-07 08:06 PM yes, some people have gotten 106 in section 1 that i've heard of, which gives a ridiculously nice UMelb raw score haha
and yeah good comparison lg, percentiles and raw scores can be vastly different

Nope, I know one guy who's dad attacked the whole UMAT process as a 'biased way of just cutting people down' even though 'they worked so hard for their ENTER scores' and 'that should be the only thing looked at'
His dad didn't mention the interview but probably would have attacked that as well if the guy got one and didn't get in
Oh and he didn't even wanna do med, he told him to stfu

Posted 04-07-07 08:27 PM and yes it does matter about the careers counsellor you have. mine told me i was fine until september when applications were due, and OH TO MY SURPRISE i missed out on practically every med school besides UWA (which i didnt have a good enough UMAT score for) and Monash and UMelb (which I knew I wasnt even close to having a good enough ENTER or UMAT for)
So my options were narrowed down to one uni, but luckily i made it in
So TRUST ME, it's one thing to do self research on this info, but it's ANOTHER THING to get a careers counsellor telling you that you don't need to worry til September, even though he knew I would apply interstate.
You can disagree and say 'oh blah blah you still should be well prepared like those potential UMelb nerds', but it's VERY different to be lulled into a false sense of security.
And even consider going to UMelb
