Any evidence to suggest Monash's UMAT cutoff isn't just a threshold?

    Hey guys,

I just noticed something: Monash offers late/separate interviews to rural, indigineous, 99.95, and high-achieving-but-disadvantaged people. For the 99.95 category, they specifically say they'll offer interviews if your UMAT is up to 10 points below the normal cut-off, and for the last category, if you ATAR is high enough, they say they'll offer you an interview if your UMAT is 50 or above.

The thing is: I can't find any mention of any differences in the ranking & selection process (i.e. all they say is that they'll offer an interview), which means that either:

    1. they're only after people who can do extremely well in the interview, compensating for their poor UMAT, or
    2. the UMAT cut-off is really just a threshold, and once you've met it they only consider ATAR+interview.

The first one still seems pretty discriminatory to me, though of course it's possible. Any thoughts?

I'm going to go ahead and claim that ATAR and Interviews are also thresholds without any proof. Prove me wrong?

    Hey DESU,
I can categorically say that UMAT is considered as part of the selection process (i.e. you're theory #2 would be wrong). I have it in an email from the admissions board (at Monash) saying the weighting of each category is 25% UMAT 25% ENTER/ATAR 50% Interview.
But the interviews are based 100% on UMAT... and because of this sole ranking of students they make rare exceptions for students who, as you specified in your notion #1, got great ATAR's but crap UMAT or are from the country or whatnot...
So yer i agree with 1 but not 2

it's so frustrating trying to wade through the masses of information on all the uni's websites in vain hope of finding your ticket in
    haha
    good luck though
    Im hoping for Monash too...

Cool, good to know. Thanks for that, Earl.

I realised that it actually more or less makes sense, because they probably expect most of the disadvantaged people to lodge SEAS applications, and so the fact that they're disadvantaged should be compensated for in that way, but of course they need to get an interview offer to be properly considered.

And good luck to you too - hah, maybe I'll see you there next year.

    Monash cut off 2011

What do you think the cut off will be for Monash med interview this year?
Due to the ATAR/UMAT stream, do you think the cut off will rise to 96 percentile for pure UMAT interviews???
    Thanks

God I hope not! I think last year it was around 60-61 (raw score)? I think the overall raw scores have increased from last year so maybe this year it'll be like 63 or 64 cut-off?

Monash UMAT Cutoff's have been fairly constant over the past few years even with the reduction of interview spots in 2010. Despite the inflation in overall score and Monash using raw scores this time around, it would be expected that the rough percentile required would be in the region of 92-95%

Also ATAR/UMAT stream has been around for a while now so I don't think it will have any catabolical impact this year. ATAR/UMAT interviews are only offered in early January to students who score 99.95%/ 45/45/ Top OP1 Band/ UAI 100 and obtain a Monash Excellence Scholarship. UMAT cutoff for this is within 10 overall points of the cutoff required for December round

I was told 61 raw score/93rd percentile equated to the UMAT cut-off for standard interviews last time. My UMAT was 66/196/95th percentile this year and I expect to scrape an interview invite. However, my guess is that with a possible ATAR of 98.5-99, there will probably be too many 99+ers in front of me and the odds will be against an offer - although with good interviews, hopefully I might be in with a chance.

    some info on last year's UMAT/ATARs: http://www.heydoc.net/Results/2011/Monash

This year, UMAT, 61 raw score/ 88th percentile so cut off for Monash might be up to 62/ 92nd. Good luck
