Revised UMAT Structure For 2012 + Revised Practice Material

I stumbled across this today while looking for GAMSAT resources (how it led me to the UMAT page is a mystery, but regardless I thought I'd share it with MSO). Note everything in brackets is the 2011 format

Section 1: Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving

    Number of questions: 48 (44)
    Time in minutes: 70 (65)

    Section 2: Understanding People
    Number of questions: 44 (40)
    Time in minutes: 55 (50)

    Section 3: Non-verbal Reasoning
    Number of questions: 42 (38)
    Time in minutes: 55 (50)

I also noticed this: "UMAT practice materials are currently being revised. They will be available for purchase again towards the end of 2011." So more practice material should be on its way (even though the statement suggests it should already be out - maybe I'm just blind and can't find the new material).

This year will be my fourth attempt at the UMAT (and hopefully my last!).

P.S. Apologies if this has already been mentioned elsewhere

So essentially the test is longer by 15 minutes, and now totals 3 hours? It was pretty long already but I guess the more questions the better it differentiates ><

This happened a couple of years ago too actually. I think that Trin is probably on to something, we noticed last year that there was an upward shift of raw scores to percentiles which I imagine was to help separate out some of the candidates closer to the middle of the bell curve, this is probably a similar measure. An extra 12 questions would definitely be useful for that.

Edit: The UMAT shouldn't be any more daunting really. Sure, it's a little longer but every other candidate also has to have a slightly longer test. It will probably affect everyone similarly so it's nothing to worry about, UMAT isn't about how many questions you got right as much as how many more questions you got right than that guy you're competing with.

Oh wow, new MSO and new, revised UMAT. So glad I did mine in 2011 lol. 15 minutes may seem like a short time, but in umat terms, it goes a long way (that's a 9% increase).

I see they've also (very) slightly reduced the time available for each question in sections 1 and 3 (section 2 remains the same, but even then, there are more questions which thus requires more endurance). I can definitely see how this will make things a bit harder and stressful, given the level of time management already required in previous papers.

Don't think there are any 'official practice material' for UMAT other than ones provided by ACER. You can try IQ puzzles or the ones by MENSA on their website for section 3 practice, and read some books/learn some vocab/watch some drama for section 2, and try and find some books on logical reasoning for section 1

Sandra, discussion of companies/people who provide prep courses for the UMAT is forbidden on MSO and you should delete your post before the #mods do.

Fantastic. :/ Although it is somewhat comforting to know everyone is in the same boat, it's going to be that little bit harder to time manage for sections 1 and 3. I can see how it will help to differentiate results, though.
