Seņor Member This is from the UMAT Sampler questions from the ACER website, since it's a sample, I think it'd be okay to post the question here.
"Delia goes bushwalking, and afterwards finds that she haspainful insect bites over most of her body. She is told that both
Esi-oil and Pine-elix are good for easing the pain of these bites.
To test whether there is any difference, she applies Esi-oil to the
bites on her left side, and Pine-elix to those on her right side. The
next day, the bites on her left side feel considerably better, while
those on her right side feel only a little better.
Which of the following is consistent with these results?
A Neither product relieves insect bite pain; Esi-oil
actually delays recovery considerably, and Pine-elix
delays recovery somewhat less.
B Neither product relieves insect bite pain; Pine-elix
actually delays recovery considerably and Esi-oil
delays recovery somewhat less.
C Both products relieve insect bite pain, Pine-elix more
so than Esi-oil.
D Pine-elix and Esi-oil are equally effective products for
relieving insect bite pain."
Can anyone explain the answer please?
Thanks =)
After reading this question I automatically assumed that Esi-oil would be more efficient, but that isn't included in the answers.. :/ a very important reminder that assumptions must not be brought in while answering a question!
D is wrong, as obviously one is found to be more effective at 'something' than the other (we are not told *what* they do to make her bites feel better)
C is wrong, as Pine-elix should be the LESS effective pain-reliever: the "right side felt only slightly better" compared to her "left side feeling considerably better". If the functions of these substances are to relieve pain, obviously Esi-oil should be the more effective pain-reliever.
A is wrong, although we can assume neither product relieves pain, Esi-oil was not found to delay recovery relative to Pine-elix.. according to the results, Esi-oil should delay recovery to a LESSER extent than Pine-elix, as the left side on which Esi-oil was applied recovered MORE QUICKLY.
Therefore B is correct.
Hey guys could someone explain question 21 on the Practice Test 1 from ACER (green coloured), that was provided when we signed up for UMAT 2011
Its the one which says "which of the following statements is true of the war in which organisms are organised in the table?"
Thanks
