This is how i got this answer:
the pattern goes (flipping everything upside down):
III (3), IV (4), VI (6),
what is logically the next number? 4-3=1, 6-4=2, the next number - 6 = 3. ie next number is 9, or IX. Which is D (since flipping IX upside down gives IX.)

Ohh that one, that was in the 2005 UMAT I think, hardly anyone could figure out, until we were told it was a mirror image of roman numerals, and it was increasing by 1, then 2 etc

I did that one and i got it right...I have no idea why though...
