    Biomedicine: future jobs??

If I do the Bachelor of Biomedicine at University of Melbourne, wot sorta jobs could I get? (excpet for being a doctor, dentist, optometrist, physio and vet)

Is becoming a researcher pretty much the only option?
I'm really worried because theres so many ppl doing biomed now and i herd that theres not many jobs available and the career pathways really limited if you don't do med/dent etc...

wot do u guys think of the prospectus? would i be better off doing pharm or become a medical scientist or sth?

ur replies wd b greatly appreciated!

Griffith Uni has a new program. Its an accelerated Biomed + Honours program. And you do both the BA and the honours in 3yrs. I think it pretty good. Because you graduate with a degree, and have done honours. Then if you do MBBS, it will be a bit less stressful, and its just another year (i.e BA+honours = 3yrs + MBBS(4yrs) = 7yrs, [undergrad path = 6]).

If you do this degree, options include research, or going on to do Phd. Discuss?

isn't biomedicine = medical science??? i always thought that the unis just choose the name for the degree, even though both are essentially the same thing if you were to strip of all the little variations between unis...

In general biomedicine = biomedical science = medical science. I suppose Melbourne uni wants a flashy name for their course so they can attract the smarter students. I must admit biomedicine sounds better that medical science.

I know a few people who are doing biomed with honours and they all think its a stupid idea. Basically your trying to research advanced topics when you haven't learnt the basic knowledge.

My friend end up going to uni 12 hours a day 5 days a week and went on weekends for lab work. He quit it and went back to regular biomed.

No, whoever told you that is misinformed.
What you said prior to that is true however, you can do postgraduate medicine after completing a biomed or med sci degree, subject to how well you do in that degree and performance in the GAMSAT.

A good place to start reading about entry requirements for australian uni's would be the blogs of each uni on these forums.

OH!-I do know about this- I think he is referring to "lateral entry" at UNSW. basically at the end of 2nd year med sci at UNSW only 15 people are chosen based on UMAT/GPA/INTERVIEW and they go on to finish med sci and do honours. After this- YES- they enter the 4th year of UNSW medicine....lateral entry is really hard to get.

Going on a little bit of a tangent, but why is Med science/biomed hated so much? I'm currently considering undergraduate courses (aiming for grad med) and i don't understand what is really so bad about the course. I've heard it's competitive, what does that actually mean?- do you have to work extremely hard just to get a pass?
And i suppose job prospectus is a big issue, are there really no other jobs other than research?
If anyone could please shed some light i'd really appreciate it.
