Default Monash or Auckland - 08-02-10, 10:56 PM

If you're living in New Zealand and can choose to do biomedicine in either Monash or Auckland, which one would you go to??

Providing that you have no accommodation in Melbourne yet.

I'd go with Auckland because the system would allow you to go direct to second year med if you're successful in applying for med next year ie do well in the GPA/UMAT/interview, but you're still eligible to apply as a non-standard to Aus unis (but like everyone else, you'd have to join first year). If you went to monash you wouldn't be able to do med in NZ- but going to Auckland keeps your options open. Also as an NZ citizen (I'm assuming you're not a dual NZ/Aus one)- you're not eligible for HECS-Help even though you can get CSP ie you'd have to pay the student contributions up front. This might be an important consideration too.

Of course Auckland is closer to home too, but ultimately, if you'd rather live in Melbourne than Auckland, then, by all means pick Monash. Personally I wouldn't consider moving away from home for biomedicine though unless it happened to be provisional- just my 2 cents. Good luck either way .

I'd go to Auckland, personally. Like hpfanfiction has pointed out, it will give you more options and, considering you can't get into med as a non-standard anywhere in Victoria, it seems pointless to go for Monash in particular. That is, of course, if you're hoping to get into med as a non-standard? If you're aiming for grad-entry at a Victorian uni though then I guess it might be helpful to have lived in Melb for 3 years or so. Still, I think it would be better to stick with Auckland and keep your options open for Auckland and Otago Unis while also saving your time and money on plane rides, etc.
