Default transferring dilemma from UNSW Bsc to USyd Pharmacy - 04-02-10, 08:05 PM

Hey, I'm starting my 1st year at UNSW this year.
I'm currently doing Bachelor Science/Arts with the hope of majoring in Pharmacology.
I'm starting to realise more than ever that pure Science isn't what i wanted to do.
I had a thing for personal health and helping people and now, I want to do Bachelor Pharmacy at USyd.
I know that i have to complete one year at UNSW before transferring but I'm scared that i won't make it.
My ATAR is 87.35

My question is that when I'm applying for 2011 admissions, would i have to tell UNSW to let them know what I'm doing?
Can i apply when i haven't completely finish Semester 2?
What if i don't get in to Pharmacy at USyd? Would UNSW let me come back and continue my 2nd year of BSc?
I know that i would have to do STAT (i haven't done it yet, and still kicking myself coz the ATAR cut-off was around 92.55 in 2010 and i could of got in- I've even had an extra 5 bonus points totally 92.35)

I'm really sorry for this big chunk of questions.
One last one; what would happen to my student contributions if i successfully transfer? I'm currently a CSP student. Would that continue on to Bachelor of Pharmacy at USdy??

Hey mate

I also completed one year at unsw doing B of science last year, and i got into pharmacy this year but not at usyd but at jcu.

Ok here is how it goes, u wanna transfer to usyd pharmacy but ur scared u may not score a high enough atar. There is no point telling unsw about ur plans in transferring as they are not gonna help u transfer , unless they tell u what subjects you will be able to transfer if u make it to pharmacy but this should actually be done by you. Research the course outline for first year pharm at usyd and take a loook yourself, then enrol in the subjects u think is suitable and u might get it transferred if u make it to pharm, this is where u can ask the unsw people for help.
Ok since u scored an 87 atar... that is not gonna guarantee u a place in usyd pharm for 2011, u might get a place in csu or une but i think the atar has gone up a bit for those two, past the 87 mark i think soo it will be a little competetive.
You want to transfer with your semester 1 results to usyd, this will also be difficult as it describes the admissions for uni students on the usyd pharm page u need to get a Distinction average for ONE FULL YEAR of uni study, or at least 48 units. One semester at unsw is merely 24units which means they will not look at ur uni results but ONLY your atar results.

Ohh and the unsw telling usyd thing, unsww has nooooo part of it, If u get an offer to B of Pharmacy at usyd or wherever next year, it will be around the january or feb time, which means u can still enrol in ur 2nd year subs for unsw IF U THINK u may not make it. If u make it to usyd pharm u can always withdraw all your units and disenroll.

Ok if u had an overall score of 92 with the bonus points i wouldnt count on this for next year, cause maybe the demand for usyd pharmacy will rise or drop. A LOT of students who apply to medicine or Medical science and dont make it usually have pharmacy as their next preference soo you may see a lot of med hopefuls in your course withe atars above 98+ trying again for med or dent or watever.

A lot of the answers to your questions you are looking for is all on the USYD PHARMACY PAge, its real easy to find ! and it explains everything about the admissions. Also check out that unit outline and as for stat, 150 is the cutoff.

Btw my course WAM for unsw was 73, soo its very close to a D average which was needed for usyd pharm, i didnt make it because i didnt pass stat.

hope this helps ya !

About STAT, what exactly is it??
If it's non-academic, then why does it contain 1/2 math questions?
I know it is multiple choice, but what is it exactly testing?
Is it possible for me to do STAT any time of the year?

Also, if i was to transfer and be successful would be position of CSP student HECS-HELP still apply automatically?

What marks at UNSW do you think i should be aiming for in this 1st year to hopefully have a chance?

Thanks for the helpful advice, really appreciate it!!

Stat - Special Tertiary Admission Test, this test is usually for people who havnt really completed universities studies or hsc and are trying to get into not so in demand subjects at uni, such as nursing, policing, teaching at some unis, science and Pharmacy at usyd along with exceptionally high atar marks or uni gpa.

Yes it is possible to sit the stat exam any time of the year, i think they have one stat test every month at jamieson high school in penrith i think. Check it properly on the stat website.

This exam is very similar to the umat exam, although its simplier and tests students on the more practical side of science and english, such as being able to read graphs and give very accurate estimates. This way they can see which students have a better cognitive ability, since the cut off for usyd pharm is 150 it should be a breeze if u have a strong english vocabulary and the ability to calculate basic maths problems really quickly.

It tests a students cognitive ability, just like an IQ test. I suggest you attend a STAT Tranining program to prepare yourself for this test. The higher you score , the better your chances is of getting in.

Ok the marks you should be aiming for 1st year is anything above a Distinction average, which is a 75 average overall. So there is NO POINT studying chemistry advance if u know u will struggle with it. If you want to transfer to another university you should do the subjects which are really simple and you think you will do really well in. Even if ur planning to transfer your units to pharmacy they will only accept 2 or 3 subjects , unless you do year 2 of science with that major in pharmacology, u might get maybe a whole year off.

Anyway make sure you focus on subjects you know you will do well in. Even though i scored 91 for chem in my hsc 2008 i still did introductory chem at uni because i knew i could ace it, and i did with a HD average.

Work Hard !!!!

take care !

hey, thanks for the encouragement, still nervous about STAT.
It's nice to know that there's people out there who's in a similar position like me, so I'm not doing it alone.

Ummm... out of curiousity, if i didn't make it and stayed, would a pharmacologist be like a pharmacist??
Which one out of these two would earn more?

I haven't started uni yet... but I'll try my best.
thanks so much for giving me such helpful info, it's more than what the email replies from uni could give!!

Pharmacologist (.gov site) v. pharmacist (.gov site).

Depends.
Google: "NSW" "salary" "state award" "pharmacist" "pharmacologist -pharmacist (Google suggests that you don't know what you just typed, and/or it can't differentiate between the two for crap), etc.
Note max., min., avg., type (e.g., community pharmacists and hospital pharmacists have different salaries, primarily because community pharmacists are businesspeople and hospital pharmacists are government jobs).

Not like it's important, but I dunno why you want to undertake more units of study than what you would require to graduate with but a requirement for an occupation in pharmacology.

Mid-course/pe'eps with (any) tert. education apps require, like, a Distinction or better avg. and STAT for USyd Pharm; both of which should be doable.

Once you get your offer for USyd BPharm, you terminate your enrollment with the UNSW course and degrees.

Presumably, you apply with the state tertiary education admission board.

I dunno.

Don't think BP's apply w/ USyd Pharm (combined Med, combined Laws, BVetSci, and, of course, grad programs (law, dent, MPharm, grad vet, USyd GMP)).

Yes, but you may have to amend your HECS-whatevs form/contract with the Commonwealth government.

'sif, IQ or psychometrics, other than vague academic aptitude.

Prolly not, 'cuz BPharm at USyd involves PP.

Yes, they should. Unless you terminate your enrollment via a official letter to the department/uni
