Hey guys, basically i am looking at starting med in 2012 after i finish my undergrad degree in biomed. I just am a little confused and i cant find anywhere what the actual pathway is to eventually work as a doctor. Could someone fill in these for me?
Undergrad degree = 3 years Medical school - 4 years Intern year- is it 1 year? Then what, then what? Also for specializing, when can you start this, do you go back to uni or do you basically work in that field for a number of years? Thanks heaps guys!!! |

2 years of residency.
Then you get into a specialist training program (they have to accept you first) but you train for 3-5 years thereabouts depending on the speciality. And that's it, you're a specialist!

Well you could do 1 year but most people opt for 2 because either it gets them better prospects for their training program application being accepted? (someone confirm or deny) and also you experience a lot of things from different departments so its good for experience.
Specialisation is mainly in hospitals, not uni (I doubt any unis run the specialist programs) but yeah.

Many programs won't accept you in the second year out (also known as PGY2).
You may not go straight in - you can do 3, 4, 5 years before getting into a speciality program. Unis do NOT run the specialist programs, you're training and studying while working. ![]() ![]() ![]()
