Default Which Specialty do you want & why? - 10-06-10, 08:39 PM

Hi All

I tried to do a search on here to see if this has been done before but I couldn't find one (apologies if it has). So just out of curiosity, which specialty are you chasing/attracted to & why? For a bit fun, which specialty is LEAST on your list and why? I thought it might be interesting to see the perception held of some specialties.

My top three are Adult Physician, Endocrinology, maybe Emergency Medicine (if I can handle quick thinking/pressure).

My least, Psychiatry....find it hard to see the real "medical" side to it (seems more like psychologist with a prescription pad) or Paeds (can't do sick children without becoming sad especially Paeds oncology).

Ok so they are my preferences/preconceptions. What are yours & why?

An "adult physician" is any physician who practices adult medicine - it's not a medical subspecialty, nor a specific term per se. A general physician is a physician who practices general medicine as a subspecialty.

So does that mean a "General Physician" would also see children? Therefore the correct term for me would be "Physician who practices Adult Medicine". Is that the correct why of phrasing it?

Also Chinaski, which specialty for you? Which is least on your list?

Physician training is broken into adult or paediatric - you generally don't do both. If you become a general physician via the adult training stream, you don't see children. If you train through the Paeds stream, you are training to become a paediatrician, not an adult physician.

I am an adult physician trainee, and that's as much info as you'll get.

Well, i was thinking surgery but not so much anymore. I don't have a particularly broad view of what's out there anyway (i never even considered that plastic surgery = reconstructive surgery, until a few days ago), so I pretty much have no clue.

So there's surgery, physician (cardio, paeds, resp, gastro, endo...etc), psych, radio? Anything else?

hmm....i'm surprised this thread has not come up before, maybe its under the guise of another subject title..?

i was pursuing neurology (thought it'd be interesting) or gp; my short block on neuro hasn't exactly been too encouraging, I think i'm finding psychology the more interesting part of neuro. GP i've yet to experience and so will reserve comment.
I want to be a physician, but I also want to do primary care. And considering the referral system in australia, I can't see how I can get into FRACP and then do primary care outside a hospital setting.

The last 6 months I've been looking at things I've never considered previously, so I can't say for sure I'm aiming for a specific speciality. I thought I wouldn't do surgery ever, but hey, I'm starting to dig anatomy and finding a practical use for it. I also thought I wouldn't do medical administration, but I'm thinking that could be another way to treating patients, by managing the system that takes care of them. so... who knows.

I'm not sure considering I don't know 1/2 the specialties out there, and I haven't experienced any of them. Perhaps geriatrics, palliative care, or admin though? I dunno, they just don't really appeal to me right now (I don't really have a reason).
